The Hart of the Green Wood is a large contemporary style oil painting of an ethereal deer stag in a clearing in a green forest. It is 40x40x1.5 inches. There are many shades of green and many transparent layers which give the painting a mystical fairy tale quality. It also catches the light in interesting ways - a little like a stained-glass window. It is the sort of tall tree green wood you see in dreams. The hart (a stag over 5 years old) stands on the right looking at something we can’t see. He is materialising and not quite of this world. Real deer have the habit of watching humans in their forests and then vanishing once they have finished staring at you. It always amazes me how such a large animal can do this so easily – as if they naturally have some magic to them. The painting was inspired by a walk I took in the Cowdray Forest (RH17 6QG) near Turners Hill. It is full of tall pine trees and ancient oaks and is worth a visit! Dedicated to all f...
I am a professional artist based in Sussex and I paint large original landscape and seascape paintings in oil on canvas. I have a Fine Art degree in sculpture (Brighton, 1983) but am mostly self taught as a painter. My painting style is a fusion of Expressionist, Impressionist, Semi-abstract, Art Deco, a little Art Nouveau and whatever mood I am in that day. I often practice a kind of Impressionism in that I walk, look at things and then paint from memory. The result is that I paint what was impressed upon me when I looked at a landscape - thus a kind of Impressionism! (I hope that makes sense).
